In the eyes of a spectator, managerial goals consist of directing, controlling, and succeeding. A managers true goals are rarely acknowledged. In the work place a manager is the head of the organization, he is the person who makes decisions concerning himself as well as his workers. He is the one person in an organization who's job is never finished, pertaining that even when he is off the clock he is still making sure things are getting done the right way. To me, some of a mangers most important goals are to have communication with his employees, to provide equality among the organization, and most of all to provide a conflict free environment.
What is a work place without communication? A disaster area. Without communication in a work place, working becomes habitual. As a manager, you want to make sure this does not happen. Communication is not considered a type of newly found technology, it is simply what occurs between people, whether a manager to an employee, or an employee to an employee. A manager should always provide a clear and an easy understanding of what to do, how to do it, and when it is to be done by. Without doing so the manager is setting himself up for a disappointment. " Communication can basically take place in three forms: (1) written, which consist fo writing letters, or memos, (2) oral, which is talking personally, and which may not always be a good source of communication due to misinterpretation and, (3) nonverbal, which includes facial expressions, gestures, andeven body movement" (Nnadi, 1997. p.103). Although, when communication problems do occur they can be avoided merely by:
Even though there are many other ways to prevent the lack of communication within an organization, I felt these four were most critical. Another element to communication is the fact that the manager should always be open to feedback, whether negative or positive, in doing so the manager can provide his employees with the guidance and acknowledgment they deserve. However the manager should take feedback in a encouraging and supportive way. Communication can be the backbone of a company. Without it you are helpless and with it you are definitely beneficial.
Another important goal of a manager is to make sure all employees are treated equally and with good ethical standards within an organization. Equality is treating people with the same amount of magnitude, value, and degree you would yourself, and to make sure all men are equal in status. "Ethics is the study and evaluation of human conduct in light of moral principals " (Richard & Florence Mason, 1999, p.19.3). Without equality and ethics within a company the manager is a prime target for lawsuits, bad publicity, and even a loss of job. The manager wants to make sure an individuals freedom is not violated, and there is an equal distribution of benefits and burdens within an organization. He also wants to make sure the more powerful don't have a advantage, and the less powerful have a disadvantage. By going by the Bill of Rights, or even another approved ethics code a manager can avoid many such dilemmas. A manager will at one time or another face an ethical crisis created by value predicaments for which there may not be a solution. In a situation like this the manager has to find ways to insure things like this do not happen again, and to develop ways in which to improve the handling of such conflicts. "People cannot respect an individual or organization if lying, deceit, or poor ethics occur. In today's society, with the constant pressures and struggles to survive, many organizations may be faced with jeapardizing their ethics and morals"(Liebowitz, 1999, p.163). In turn, "Managers work as moral agents, they make decisions in order to achieve goals for an organization" ( Mason, R & M, 1997, p.19.3), which in return can make a successful company if the decisions are made ethically, and with equality.
The third but most important of managerial goals is to provide a conflict free enviorment within an organization. Conflict is basically an overt behavior that results when an individual or group of individuals thinks a perceived need has been blocked or is about to be blocked. Organizations try to avoid conflicts at allcosts but conflicts are unavoidable. Usually, conflict occurs because individuals have different perceptions, beliefs, and goals than that of the organization, manager, or co-worker. Sometimes conflicts even occur due to lack or teamwork. "If compelling vision is the fuel for an enviorment of commitment, real teamwork is the day-to-day grease"(Pearce, 1999, p.19.21), so without teamwork and organization, disagreements as well as intense friction can arise. Conflicts can lead to severe tension within an organization and can cause disruption within the work place. Conflict doesn't always have to be harmful though, they can also have positive effects. They can rouse a person , or manager, to take notice of what is going on and to fix the problem before it gets out of hand. Conflicts can also provide an outlet for all the tension built up in an organization. In addition, conflicts can make a manager, or co-worker be aware of the issue or issues. Conflicts just don't appear suddenly, they progress through stages before they fully take their tone, as a manager you want to stop it at the first stage. You want to communicate internally as well as externally with the employee to avoid yourself as well as the employee of any misunderstandings, and to make sure no barriers evolve, because when barriers exist, people react with defense mechanisms.
Managers can resolve conflicts simply by:
By resolving conflicts within an organization the manager provides a workable, and open enviorment for the employees. Although, managers may have many goals that are critical, in my opinion communication, equality & ethics, and a conflict fee enviorment are considered most important. These goals would maintain a consistent outflow of positivity within an organization. A manager has to literally carry out these goals in order to have unity among his employees. Just the mere thought of them can not make any changes for a better future. So, communication, equality, and an conflict free enviorment can provide success, control, and a good direction for a company and its manager.
